Inaugurated in 1993, the Makati Shangri-La graced the Philippines with its presence, quickly becoming one of the largest hotels of that era with a whopping 28 floors housing more than 700 luxurious rooms.
Over the years, Shangri-La Makati has etched its name in the hearts of many with its diverse array of offerings. From live music performances that enlivened nights to its high-end accommodation facilities that provided an abode of comfort, the hotel truly mastered the art of hospitality. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, however, Shangri-La Makati announced a temporary hiatus in February 2021. The move came as a result of the pandemic’s detrimental effects on the hospitality industry, with several hotels across the city forced to close their doors due to stringent lockdown measures and the economic strain.
Shangri-La Makati was not immune to these challenges, stating at the time, “The extended recovery period has inflicted significant financial burdens on our operations here in the Philippines.” The announcement of their closure was a somber one, adding, “As part of this restructuring process, it is with heavy hearts that we bid farewell to some of our team members and temporarily shut down operations at Makati Shangri-La, Manila.”
Today, the tides have turned, and with the reopening of Shangri-La Makati, there’s an air of resilience and rejuvenation in the city.
